I’ve been hanging out mostly in the past and future these days. Mary Alice was away for several weeks, during which time I transcribed and organized my journals and saved emails and such. It was interesting to review the last several years. In so many ways not a damned thing has changed, and yet… I also just visited the folks last week, plunging me further into the past. I was rummaging through a box of old stuff and found a cassette tape I must have recorded back in ‘81 or ‘82. I had just received a little boom-box/recorder for Christmas and spent the day recording all kinds of shit. It starts off with my little brother making baby noises and my prepubescent voice encouraging him on. Then there’s about a half hour of me and my friend David goofing around, farting and calling each other fags, impersonating Michael Jackson, and laughing our asses off at every stupid little thing. I also found a tape of my first girlfriend, Ann-Marie, an audio letter she sent to me when we first started dating. It’s amazing how shit that seems totally dead to me can jump back to life. Then there’s the future. The wedding is looming, and there’s a ton of shit to plan, etc. I’m looking forward to it though. Then I have to decide what to do when Mary Alice goes to Mexico for her year of fieldwork. I’m leaning toward a return to Carrboro, since we’re planning on settling down there anyway once she gets done with school. Sigh.
